The Bordeaux house can be thought of as three distinct houses or levels stacked on top of each other. Each level has a different architectural program.

The 3 levels are linked together by an elevator platform and 3 sets of stairs. Like the levels, each stair and an elevator has a separate program. The elevator is the "machine at the heart of the house" - without it the levels are incomplete. The platform can be stopped in between the levels to act as a separate space.
In addition to the platform, there are 3 sets of stairs which provide different circulation paths for people within the house: wife's and kids' stairs link up all the levels, and another set of stairs for guests connects the bottom level with the middle. This strengthens the distinction between public and private within the house.
